A recruiter in Karachi, Lahore or Islamabad does not read your CV — they scan it. In the first ten seconds they look for three things: the job title you want, the skills the advertisement asked for, and proof you have done similar work. If those three are easy to find, your CV survives. If they have to hunt, it does not. This guide shows you how to build a CV that passes that first scan, whether you are a fresh graduate in Multan or an experienced technician in Faisalabad.
The structure that works
Keep the order below. It matches how both human recruiters and applicant-tracking software (ATS) read a document — top to bottom, looking for relevance first.
- Header: your full name, the exact job title you are applying for, city, phone number and a professional email address. Nothing else belongs here.
- Professional summary: three or four lines — who you are, your strongest skills, and one proof point (a result, a certificate, years of experience).
- Skills: a clean list that mirrors the words used in the job advertisement.
- Experience: most recent first. Each role gets two to four bullet points that start with an action verb and, where possible, include a number.
- Education: degree, institution and year. Add your board or university name exactly as it appears on your documents.
- Certifications and training: only relevant ones — a computer course matters for office jobs; safety training matters for technical trades.
- Languages: Urdu and English at minimum; add regional languages if the job involves the public.
A summary that earns the next ten seconds
Most summaries fail because they describe the writer's wishes ("seeking a challenging position in a reputable organisation") instead of the writer's value. Compare:
Weak: "Hardworking and honest person seeking a job in a good company where I can grow my career."
Strong (example): "Accounts assistant with 2 years of experience in a Lahore trading firm. Daily command of MS Excel and QuickBooks; reconciled 300+ monthly invoices with zero audit objections. Seeking an accounts role in a manufacturing company."
The second version works because every sentence is checkable: a title, a place, named tools, and a number. Write yours the same way, using your own facts — never copy numbers you cannot defend in an interview.
Keywords: how ATS software reads your CV
Larger companies and testing services filter applications with software before a human sees them. The software looks for the same words the advertisement used. So before you apply:
- Read the advertisement slowly and note its exact skill words — "data entry", "AutoCAD", "patient care", "Tally", "social media marketing".
- Use those exact words in your Skills section and, honestly, inside your experience bullets.
- Use standard headings (Experience, Education, Skills). Fancy headings like "My Journey" confuse the software.
- Save and send the file as PDF unless the advertisement asks for Word. Name it properly: YourName-CV.pdf, never CV final final 2.pdf.
Government vs private CVs in Pakistan
The two worlds expect slightly different documents:
- Government jobs (FPSC, PPSC, SPSC, KPPSC, BPSC, NTS): follow the advertisement and the application form first. Where a separate CV is requested, a detailed biodata style is acceptable — include father's name, CNIC, domicile and full academic record only when the form asks for them. Accuracy matters more than design; every date must match your documents.
- Private companies: the tight one-to-two page format above. No CNIC, no father's name, no religion or marital status — private recruiters neither need nor expect them, and leaving them out is the modern standard.
- Overseas jobs: add your trade certificates, passport validity and any Gulf or international experience clearly at the top. Never pay an agent who promises a visa in exchange for your original documents — read our upcoming guide on safe overseas applications, and always verify the employer through official channels.
Seven mistakes that get CVs rejected
- One CV for every job. Ten minutes of tailoring beats fifty blind applications.
- Spelling errors in the first three lines. Print it once and read it aloud before sending.
- An unprofessional email address. Create a simple firstname.lastname address for job hunting.
- Lying about qualifications. Government recruitments verify documents; private employers check in interviews. One false claim ends the whole application.
- Huge photo and decorative design. Tables, text boxes and heavy graphics break ATS software and print badly.
- No proof. "Good communication skills" convinces nobody; "handled a 40-student class" or "served 60 customers daily" does.
- Applying after the deadline because the CV was not ready. Keep a master CV updated monthly so a tailored copy takes minutes, not days. Government advertisements with closing dates are listed daily on our Jobs page.
Fresh graduates: what to put when experience is thin
Lead with education and move Skills above Experience. Your internships, final-year project, freelance work and volunteer roles are your experience — describe them with the same action verbs and numbers. Preparing for a commission exam alongside applications? Our Prepare section has daily practice sets for CSS, PMS, FPSC, NTS and MPT, and the exam boards' official sources are linked there too.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a CV be in Pakistan?
One page for fresh graduates and up to two pages for experienced professionals. Government applications sometimes ask for a detailed biodata format instead — always follow the advertisement's instructions first.
Should I add a photo to my CV?
For most private-sector and online applications, a photo is optional and usually unnecessary. For government jobs in Pakistan, include one only when the advertisement or application form asks for it.
What is the difference between a CV and a resume?
In Pakistan the words are used almost interchangeably. A CV is typically the longer, detailed document used for government and academic posts; a resume is a shorter one-to-two page summary used for private companies.
How do I apply without experience?
Lead with education, internships, freelance or volunteer work, and projects. Name the skills each one proves, and tailor the summary to the exact job you are applying for.
